Background of the study

Traditional markets are integral to the cultural and economic fabric of many communities, serving as hubs for commerce, social interaction, and cultural exchange. In Kaduna State, these markets are not merely sites of economic transactions but also vibrant spaces where social networks are built and maintained. Vendors, customers, and local artisans interact regularly, forging relationships that extend beyond business and into community life (Ibrahim, 2023). Traditional markets facilitate trust, reciprocity, and mutual support, all of which are essential components of social capital. They also serve as arenas for cultural expression, where local traditions, languages, and customs are reinforced through daily interactions. Despite modernization and the emergence of formal retail systems, traditional markets continue to thrive by adapting to contemporary needs while preserving their cultural essence. However, rapid urban development and policy changes pose challenges to their sustainability. This study investigates the role of traditional markets in fostering social networks in Kaduna State, exploring how these vibrant hubs contribute to community cohesion and social resilience.

Statement of the problem

While traditional markets in Kaduna State remain central to community interaction, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of their role in building and sustaining social networks. Modern retail trends and urban development are threatening to erode these traditional spaces, potentially diminishing the social capital they generate. The absence of supportive policies and infrastructural investments further exacerbates this issue, undermining the markets’ ability to serve as effective community hubs (Bello, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

To assess the contribution of traditional markets to social network formation in Kaduna State.

To identify the challenges faced by traditional markets amid urban development.

To recommend strategies for enhancing the role of traditional markets in community cohesion.

Research questions

How do traditional markets foster social networks in Kaduna State?

What challenges do these markets face in maintaining their social and economic roles?

What measures can support the sustainability of traditional markets as community hubs?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it highlights the essential role of traditional markets in building social networks and fostering community cohesion. The findings will inform urban planning and cultural preservation strategies, ensuring that these critical social spaces are supported and maintained in Kaduna State (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

This study is limited to traditional markets in Kaduna State and focuses on their role in social network formation. It does not address modern retail environments. Limitations include challenges in quantifying social interactions and potential regional differences in market dynamics.
